21-Mar-2006 · 10:00pm The Blackhawks entered the Jack Gatecliff Arena Tuesday night with the semifinal series against the St. Catharines Falcons tied (1-1) after drowning the Falcons 9-1 the previous night in Thorold. The Falcons, trying to switch things up, found themselves in the penalty box again, this time giving the Blackhawks an early 2-0 lead on power-play goals. The Blackhawks notched a goal early at the 2:48 mark of the first period from Steve Zmudczynski on the power-play while Mike Chmielewski sat in the penalty box for an interference call. Thorold jumped to a 2-0 lead just under 11 minutes later when Joey Koudys beat Falcons netminder Sean Hall, also a power-play goal, at 13:06 of the same period. This time, Falcons captain Kelsey Blinkhorn sat in the penalty box for an interference infraction when Thorold scored. The Blackhawks held onto the 2-0 lead as they skated into the dressing room for the first intermission. The Falcons finally broke onto the scoreboard, early in the second period, on a power-play goal from Nick Petriello. The Falcons goal cut the Blackhawks lead to 2-1. Jamie Heywood and Chris Stevenson assisted on Petriello's 7th goal of the playoffs.
The Falcons tied the game at 8:56 of the second period on Nick Petriello's 2nd goal of the game and 8th of the playoffs. Petriello's goal came unassisted and at even strength. St. Catharines jumped out to a 3-2 lead at the 10:19 minute mark of the same period on Mike Chmielewski's 6th goal of the playoffs. The power-play marker, that beat Thorold goaltender Sean Ramanauskas, was assisted by Falcons forwards Chris Stevenson and Mike Dahms. The Blackhawks tied the game again at 3-3 when Joey Koudys scored his second goal of the game at 17:25 of the 2nd period. Joey Martin notched his second assist of the game as well. The game remained tied going into the second intermission. The Falcons took the lead again at the 10:47 mark of the third period on Mike Chmielewski's 2nd goal of the game. Nick Petriello recorded an assist on the goal, as well as Falcons defenseman Kevin Floris. Thorold tied the game again, making it 4-4 on a Steve Chappell goal at 12:43. Chris Risi and Tyler Brown assisted on the play, which left 7:17 to play in the third period. Like Game #1 of the best-of-seven series, extra time was needed to solve the match as the two teams ended the third period tied 4-4. At the end of 60 minutes of play, Thorold lead the Falcons in shots by 34-24. Nothing could be resolved with the extra 10 minute overtime period, so the ice was cleaned and flooded while the two teams hit the dressing for the third intermission. The 5th period (second overtime period) started shortly after 9:45pm. Thorold's Joey Martin notched the game winning goal at 8:02 of the second overtime period, on a rebound off of Falcons goalie Sean Hall. Joey Koudys recorded an assist on the goal. Martin and Koudys both netted 3 points Tuesday night. Final shots on net against St. Catharines were 41, while the Falcons took 30 shots on the Blackhawks netminder. The next game of the series takes place on Thursday, March 23rd, when the Falcons skate into the Thorold Arena for Game #4 of the semifinal series. Game time on Thursday is 7:30pm. Game #5 is set for Friday, March 24th, when the Blackhawks visit the Jack Gatecliff Arena for a 7:30pm start. Come early to get a good seat, but you'll only need the edge!
