Falcons drum Thorold 3-2

11-Jan-2008 · 9:45pm

With girls and boys hockey teams from Denis Morris High School to drop the opening puck, D.M.'s own "Trial and Temptation" live band to lead the warmup, and the Denis Morris drummers to help support the Falcons during the game, it was quite the event Friday night against the visiting Thorold Blackhawks.

Not to let any fans down, including D.M. students, Scott Madden opened the scoring for the Falcons in the first period, grabbing a power-play goal at the 15:45 mark to set the pace of the game. Dan Ziraldo and Mike Stone assisted on the first goal of the game. The period ended with the Falcons owning a 1-0 lead over the Blackhawks. Shots favoured Thorold 13-8 after 20 minutes of play.

Thorold kicked off the second period, grabbing an early goal to tie the game 1-1. At almost 1:30 into the second, Thorold's leading scorer Shane Davidson beat Falcons netminder Steele De Fazio on Thorold's first shot of the period. Former Falcon Jason Aucoin and Ryan Bellows assisted on the tying goal.

Falcons forward Vladimir Bessonov received a two minute checking from behind penalty plus an automatic game misconduct 13:29 into the second period when he hit former Falcon Dan Williams into the boards behind the Thorold net. Williams got up and skated on his own back to the bench after the hit.

The score remained tied 1-1 at the end of 40 minutes of play, with the Falcons owning the shots on net in the second 10-7.

St. Catharines grabbed a 2-1 lead early in the third period with Dan Ziraldo's 4th goal of the season at the 2:57 minute mark. Mike Stone and Ryan Elbers added helpers on the goal.

Thorold answered right back, tying the game once again Friday night. Shane Davidson netted his second goal of the game, on the power-play, with another assist going to Aucoin. Time of the goal for the Blackhawks was 4:33 in the third.

The Falcons took a bench minor for too many men on the ice penalty just past the half way mark of the third period, but it didn't help the Blackhawks out with tying the game. St. Catharines stole the lead once again, this time with an even-strength goal from Brad Jackson at the 14:36 mark of the third. JT MacDonald assisted on the go-ahead goal making the score 3-2 in favour of St. Catharines with 5:24 to play.

With goaltender Marcus Menard pulled, the Blackhawks couldn't hit the back of the Falcons net with an extra attacker on the ice, and St. Catharines dropped the Blackhawks 3-2 in front of a loud crowd of 1,218 fans inside Jack Gatecliff Arena.

The Falcons have the weekend off, with no games scheduled until the following weekend.

The Falcons next game is at home on Friday, January 18th, when the Welland Jr. Canadians visit Jack Gatecliff Arena for a 7:30pm start.
