Back-to-back shutouts for STC
26-Sep-2008 · 9:35pm
Back in February of this year, the last time Port Colborne
was in St. Catharines, the Falcons sunk the Sailors 8-2 in front of 454
fans. Trying to forget that game, the newly named Pirates took to the
ice inside Jack Gatecliff Arena Friday night with a different logo and
a different game plan.
The first period turned out to be 20 minutes of forechecking
from both clubs, but neither team could find the back of the net. The
scoreless period had its fair share of penalties, however, with Port Colborne
taking three, and St. Catharines two.

After the first intermission, the Falcons finally broke
open the scoring with a power-play goal just over three minutes into the
second period. Falcons forward Brandon McGregor scored his second goal
of the season, with assists to Adam Moroney and Dylan McInnis. Goaltender
Nicholas Gigone allowed the first goal of the night for Port Colborne.
The Mountainview Homes Falcons doubled their lead on
the opposite end of the period when Miles Torch picked up Riley Sheahan's
rebound to grab his 4th goal of the season. Riley Sheahan picked up the
assist to record his 17th point of the regular season.

Even though the score remained 2-0 for the Falcons at
the end of 40 minutes of play, Port Colborne held onto their shots on
net lead by 21-19. The Pirates were penalized twice in the second period,
while the Falcons were in the penalty box only once.

The third period remained scoreless until St. Catharines
netted an empty-netter with 10 seconds to play in the game. Falcons netminder
Jeff Sinclair stopped all 37 shots on net Friday night to record his first
shutout of the season, as well as grabbing his fourth win of the year.
The Pirates definitely had their chances, but couldn't
get a shot past the hot backstop. Gigone played a solid game between the
pipes for Port Colborne, but just didn't get the same help from his defense
as Sinclair did from the Falcons.
Attendance was announced at 465 fans Friday night. The
Mountainview Homes Falcons next game is at home inside Jack Gatecliff
Arena on Friday, October 2nd, when the Wheatfield Jr. Blades visit St.
Catharines for their second time this season. Game time is 7:30pm.
