Power-play breaks Blades

With the National Hockey League kicking off its regular season this weekend, October must definitely be here! Hitting the ice Friday night inside Jack Gatecliff Arena were the Wheatfield Jr. Blades in their second visit to St. Catharines this season. In the Mountainview Homes Falcons season opener, St. Catharines dropped the Jr. Blades 7-1.

Though the Falcons dominated most of the first period, including shots on net at 15-8, the Jr. Blades kept the score close, allowing only one goal in the first 20 minutes of play. Falcons defenseman Scott Madden scored his 5th goal of the season on the power-play at the 12:05 mark of the period. Riley Jakobschuk and Adam Moroney assisted. Wheatfield's Rob MacFarlane sat in the penalty box for a hooking infraction.

The Falcons added to their lead in the second period with another power-play goal, this time from Falcons forward Matt Lorito. The forward beat Wheatfield netminder Daniel Ramirez during a large scrum in front of the net. Adam Moroney notched another assist for St. Catharines, while Scott Retzlaff sat in the box for a two minute cross-checking call.

The period ended with the Falcons still holding onto a 2-0 lead, while also extending their shots on net lead to 29-14 after 40 minutes of play.

The Falcons scored another power-play goal to extend their lead to 3-0 in the third period. Adam Montgomery scored the Falcons third goal of the night (also their third power-play goal) 8:34 into the final regulation period of play. Falcons leading scorer Riley Sheahan assisted along with forward Matt Lorito.

The Wheatfield Jr. Blades recorded 23 shots on Falcons goaltender Jeff Sinclair in a losing effort, as he easily turned them all away for his second shutout of the season with a 3-0 win. It was his 5th win to date.

The announced attendance Friday night inside Jack Gatecliff Arena was 463 fans. The Falcons next game is on the road when they visit the Thorold Blackhawks this Wednesday, October 8th. Game time at Thorold's Main Arena is 7:07pm.

The Mountainview Homes Falcons next home game is Friday, October 10th, when the Thorold Blackhawks complete a home-and-away series with the Falcons. Game time inside the Jack is 7:30pm.
