Falcons take 1st place overall

There was a lot on the line Tuesday night as the Niagara Falls Canucks visited the St. Catharines Mountainview Homes Falcons for their first trip this season. Not only would the Falcons get out of a second place tie with a win over the Canucks, St. Catharines would also leap frog over Stoney Creek for sole possession of first place of the Golden Horseshoe Conference.

The Canucks grabbed an early 2-0 lead over the Falcons with goals in the first period from former Falcon J.T. MacDonald and Riley Steeves. The Falcons answered back with a late power-play goal from Riley Sheahan with just 16 seconds to play in the opening period.

The Mountainview Homes Falcons outshout the visiting Canucks 10-8 after the first 20 minutes of play.

The teams reversed roles in the second period, with the Falcons grabbing two goals to jump out to a 3-2 lead by the 15:49 minute mark. Andrew Kilcar scored an incredible short-handed goal, beating Canucks goaltender Matthew Szostak upstairs. Cameron Youash netted the other goal for St. Catharines.

Niagara Falls outshot the Falcons 9-7 in the second period, and after 40 minutes of play the two teams were tied 17-17 in shots on net.

The Canucks netted the tying goal in the third period with a goal from forward John Ennis, but the Falcons scored a late one which would end up being the game winner. Matt Lorito bounced a shot off the post at the 17:43 mark of the third to give St. Catharines a 4-3 lead, and with an empty-netter to make the score 5-3, the Falcons jumped into first place overall.

The attendance Tuesday night was announced at 259 fans. The Falcons next game is at home on Friday, October 24th, when the Kitchener Dutchmen of the Midwestern Conference visit the Garden City for the Falcons first interleague game of the season. Game time is 7:30pm.
