Falcons top Kitchener 5-4

The Kitchener Dutchmen of the Midwestern Conference of
the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League made their way down Highway 6
to the Q.E.W. where they faced the Mountainview Homes Falcons inside Jack
Gatecliff Arena Friday night for a regular season interconference matchup.

Chris Garbacz struck first for the Falcons, putting them
up 1-0 before the first intermission. Garbacz beat Dutchmen netminder
Jordan Bowes with Falcons forwards Riley Sheahan and Miles Torch close
behind. Garbacz's second goal of the season came at the 13:15 minute mark.
There were a total of 12 shots in the first period, with
St. Catharines grabbing seven of them. Falcons goaltender Jeff Sinclair
turned away all five shots he faced in the first 20 minutes of play.

The Kitchener Dutchmen tied the game 1-1 in the second
period during a mad-scramble in front of Sinclair. Matt Murphy scored
Kitchener's first goal ever inside Jack Gatecliff Arena at the 5:54 mark
of the period.
Kitchener jumped out to a 2-1 lead less than 5 minutes
later when Joel Hoekstra hit the back of the Falcons net at the 10:51
mark of the same period.
Brandon McGregor tied the game for St. Catharines with
less than 5 minutes to play in the second period with a beautiful steal
from a Kitchener defenseman that resulted in a short-handed, unassisted
goal at the 15:23 minute mark.

Still in the second period, Kitchener grabbed a power-play
goal to jump up 3-2 over St. Catharines just 23 seconds after McGregor's
goal. Once again, the Falcons tied the game3-3, with their own power-play
goal, from forward Matt Lorito with 3 minutes and 10 seconds left to play
in the period.
The Dutchmen added one more goal before the end of the
second period to make the score 4-3 for the second intermission. Kitchener
also outshot the Falcons 15-11, grabbing a two-period total of 20-18.
The Falcons opened the third period with their fourth
goal of the game to tie the score 4-4 at just 1:23 into the period. Miles
Torch scored his 11th of the season, on the power-play.
St. Catharines took the lead again 7:59 into the third
period with Riley Jakobschuk's 11th goal of the season. Jakobschuk fought
past Kitchener's defense and beat their goalie to give the Falcons a 5-4
lead. There was a moment of worry after the goal, as Riley crashed shoulder-first
into the boards and had to be helped off the ice. He returned later in
the period.
Jakobschuk's goal held until the end of the game, giving
St. Catharines their 12th win of the season. Final shots on net were 27-24
in favour of the Kitchener Dutchmen.
The attendance Friday night for Kitchener's first trip
to St. Catharines was announced at 544. The Falcons next game is Saturday,
October 25th, when St. Catharines travels to Port Colborne for a 7:30pm
start against the Pirates. The Falcons next home game is Friday, October
31st, when the Stoney Creek Warriors visit Jack Gatecliff Arena. Game
time on Halloween night is 7:30pm.
