Falcons don't scare Warriors

31-Oct-2008 · 9:30pm

Happy Hallowe'en! The Stoney Creek Warriors were trick o' treating inside Jack Gatecliff Arena Friday night, facing the Mountainview Homes Falcons with their second visit this season.

The Warriors were spooked in the first period as the Falcons scored two early markers, while Stoney Creek remained shutout during the first 20 minutes of play.

Falcons forward Matt Lorito scored 1:17 into the game, after Scott Madden shot the puck off the back boards and deflected it perfectly onto the stick of Lorito. Riley Sheahan scored the Falcons second goal, on an unassisted break-away. Sheahan scored a beautiful goal as he skated past two Stoney Creek defensemen, stole the puck, and put it past Warriors netminder Dylan Ellis.

The Falcons owned a 2-0 lead at the first intermission, while also outshooting the Warriors 10-4 after 20 minutes.

The Falcons added to their lead in the second period when Sheahan scored his second of the night at the 6:29 minute mark. Cameron Youash assisted on the goal.

The Warriors came to life following Sheahan's goal, grabbing three power-play goals in a row to tie the game 3-3 after 40 minutes of play. Joel Steeves netted two of the goals for Stoney Creek, while Kevin Rebelo grabbed the third.

Both coaches were frustrated through out the evening as the people dressed up in referee costumes continued to make questionable call after call, slowing the game to the disbelief of most fans inside the building.

The Warriors took a 4-3 lead in the third period with another power-play goal, this time from Jason Popek. Jordan Gignac and Rebelo assisted on the go-ahead goal 6:58 into the period.

Stoney Creek added an empty-netter with 34 seconds to play in the game, and sealed the final score 5-3 in front of 254 fans inside Jack Gatecliff Arena.

The Falcons next game is Saturday, November 1st, when the Falcons travel to Port Colborne to face the Pirates. Game time from Port Colborne is 7:30pm.

The Falcons next home game is Friday, November 7th, when the last place Welland Jr. Canadians visit the Garden City. Game time is 7:30pm.
